http://www.paherald.sk.ca/index.cfm?sid=77850&sc=4
PRINCE ALBERT–Update on Wal-Mart case (BDN v7 #21, 22, 35, 36, 38). Lawyers argue for and against publication ban protecting ID of mother charged with abandoning baby in Wal-Mart earlier this year. Defense claims if woman is ID’d the baby who needs legal protection, will also be identified. In child’s long-term interest to remain anonymous. Lawyer for Lac La Ronge Indians who have custody of baby argues “If the woman’s name is made public, the child might find out the circumstances of his birth through newspaper articles and such. These articles can be scrapbooked and kept around for years, to the age when the child can understand what happened to him…” will be known as the “Wal-Mart baby that was flushed down a toilet.” Defense agrees says child can only remain “protected” if mother’s name is “kept secret.” Both say judge shouldn’t heed media argument for ID.
