Judge hears case in newborn death

ARNOLD–Update on Meagan Patria case (BDN v5 #50; v6 #7, 19; v7 #5, 7.) Hearing in Juv. Court; judge says she will rule “shortly.” Patria maintains she hid pregnancy and planned to deliver baby with help of friend and then place it for adoption, without family’s knowledge. Instead went into labor at home and didn’t know what to do. Believed baby was dead. Named the baby Jordan. Prosecutor denies Patria’s story; says she smoked and drank through pregnancy, didn’t seek prenatal care, and sought information on ‘net on how to cause a miscarriage.

Teenager admits leaving newborn baby in trash

ARNOLD–More on hearing. Patria’s lawyer says Patria planned to keep baby in her bed, but her mother and a friend came home, so she did the ‘next best thing” and placed the body in a bag and took it outside to the trash. Autopsy determined baby died from asphyxia, either from drowning or from being left in bag. Exposure could have aggravated death. Prosecutor argues that baby was too big to fit in toilet bowl.

“More women killing there newborns”

http://www.iol.co.za/index.php?set_id=1&click_id=15&art_id=vn20070721090939700C526526

JOHANNESBURG–Thelma Mathee, acting director for national programmes at Child Welfare believes there is a significant rise in mothers who kill their children. “We have always had problems with abandoned children but we are now seeing a very different kind of abandonment. In the past mothers used to leave their babies where they could be found by, but not anymore. They are simply getting rid of them by killing them. They think that getting rid of the baby will solve their problems…Even our social workers are stunned at what is happening. We don’t now what it is. Most women have a maternal instinct, but the woman from Mamelodi was helped by two other women. (BDN v7 #28, 29). It’s is not natural. I want to urge mothers-to-be to take their unwanted babies to places of safety like police stations or just leave them where someone will find them. Review of several recent cases.
