ANAHEIM–Customer at Denny’s near Disneyland finds full-term newborn girl in bathroom; 17-year old from Indiana believed to be mother. Baby “healthy.” As of Jan. 2007 there have been 182 SH cases while 146 infants discarded but found alive.

ANAHEIM–Unidentified 17-year old mother charged with suspicion of felony child abuse and felony child neglect; remains hospitalized. Will be taken to OC Juvenile Hall once released. Reportedly was at Denny’s with her boyfriend, his parents and 2 children when she went to the bathroom and delivered baby. Parents in Indiana, who probably did not know she was pregnant, have been informed.

MIAMI–Update on Lindsey Scott case (BDN v7 #28) Scott’s parents suspected she was pregnant. Mother joked with her when she found a pair of black maternity pants in wash, but Lindsey denied she was pregnant. Said she’d purchased pants by mistake and was embarrassed to return them. Scott held without bond.

ST. PAUL–Update on missing newborn case (BDN v6 #29, 30). A year later, authorities still not certain whether “missing baby” ever existed. 15-year old runaway told police various stories about abandoning newborn then said she had never been pregnant. Dovonta Norman, the alleged father, hopes there is a baby and its alive; wants to be a father. Even medical evidence of pregnancy and delivery is contradictory; girl may have suffered from pseudocyesis, or false pregnancy.

Griffin, charged with child neglect after she leaves month-old baby, strapped in carseat, in brushy area near I35-W while she goes to friend’s house to commit act of prostitution. Witness confronted her and threatened to call police. She told him to do what he had to do and left; arrested half hour later upon return when witness IDs her to police. Griffin convicted of several drug and prostitution charges in last 2 years.

WOOSTER–Update on porch case (BDN v7 #26, 27, 28). Brandy J. Weiser, 30, from Millersburg, charged with endangering children; faces up to 180 days in jail and $1000 fine. Prosecutor says his office considered nature of the offense, including actual and potential harm and the “circumstances of the defendant including her age, level of education, her living arrangements and lifestyle. Wayne County Social Services says they work independent of police and rarely make recommends regarding prosecution; if recommendations are made, the police are free to do with them what they please. Prosecutor says he is launching a SH “No Questions Asked” public awareness campaign.

PERTH–Update on recycling plant case (BDN v7 # 24, 25, 26). Public funeral will be held Saturday; baby will be buried in donated christening gown. Donated headstone will probably bear a biblical name, “affectionately chosen to refer to the baby boy by funeral staff, who cannot legally name the child.” Cause of death unknown, investigation continues.

Avakyan says she is poor, has no money to raise child, and had to give birth at train station since she had no time to get to hospital. Avakyan’s family refuses to care for baby; said they could barely care of her first, a 7-year old boy. Both born out of wedlock. Baby’s father refuses to take him. JOHANNESBURG–Cecilla Mokgabane Seale, 34 and aunt Rosinah Show, 48, who confessed last week to killing baby and burying body in yard drop bail application. Seale also confessed to killing another baby a year ago. Police investigating Seale’s midwife on the possibility that she may have assisted in this and other neonaticides. Protestors meet outside and demand all 3 be given life sentences. Carry signs reading, “Condoms are free. Abortion is legal. No bail for baby killer” and “Thou shalt not kill, Exodus 20:13.” Seale’s’ brother says he’s happy women will remain in custody; fears for their safety if released.
