Santa Ana fire public information officer says, “On the one hand you’d want a family to remain in tact. But if we didn’t have this mechanism, that kid given the wrong set of parents, could wind up in an alley or a doorstep.”

Discusses negative effect passage of bill will have on hanai and Native Hawaiian culture. “Enactment of this bill would preclude abandoned children of their Hawai’ian ancestry from knowing of, or being able to prove their blood quantum to qualify for housing, schooling or other benefits…The extended family is commonly recognized to be an integral part of our nuclear family. In addition, and unlike the mainland states, the Hawai’ian cultural practice of open adoption or “hanai” is till common.”

WHEELING–Obit of James P. O’Neill, volunteer for Rest in His Arms, a group that buries abandoned infants. Became involved through Knights of Columbus. Under leadership the Knights secured hearses for abandoned infants, served as pallbearers, offered financial support and for the first time “lined the center aisle of the church as honor guard for Baby Hope (BDN v6 #43-44, 45, 46, 47, 49, 50).

Later hospital receives call from Kanokwan Sinsuk, 19, claiming to be mother saying she and cousin would reclaim him. Says baby is 7 days old and father deserted them. A friend was interested in raising baby and she went to meet her. Left baby in truck when she returned home to pick up something she forgot and when she returned baby was gone. Police find story unconvincing and baby has not been returned. Investigation pending. Pictures.
