ANNAPOLIS–Update on the Megan Rene Patria case (BDN v5 #50; v6 #7, 19). During pre-trial hearing, prosecutor argues that Patria, then 17, lied to mother and school officials about pregnancy told the father she’d “taken care of” the pregnancy, and went online to learn how to abort. Prosecutor claims Patria left baby in toilet for about 10 minutes after birth before placing body on towel. Threw baby in trash when her mother came home. Dept. of Juvenile Justice social worker recommends Patria be tried as juvenile.

New details emerge in baby’s death

ANNAPOLIS–More on Patria case. Prosecutors say Patria surfed ‘net to find ways to cause miscarriage; joked with friend about having him kick her in stomach. Defense says Patria only considered ending pregnancy in early months; even came up with plan to have friend help her deliver baby and then give it up for adoption by taking it to a church. “The plan may not have been a good plan, a realistic plan..I think it is clear through all reports that Megan Patria did not want to hurt this child.” Patria lied to parents about pregnancy; friend who was aware of pregnant went to school administrators, but Patria lied to them about pregnancy, also. One friend offered to take her to hospital where she could get help keeping baby a secret from her parents (safe haven?) but she refused.

UPPER DARBY–Update on Piscopo/Leone case (BDN v7 #4). Piscopo/Leone family says they’ll cooperate with police investigation. Piscopo lawyer says he doesn’t understand allegation by police that they won’t cooperate, since the family reported the death. Upper Darby Police Supt. Michael Chitwood says he has 4 witnesses lined up but suspected mother has been “stashed away” by her lawyers. “My experience…is when you have somebody with power and affluence in a higher economic arena there are roadblocks that are thrown at investigating agencies. When an investigation involves people of a lower socioeconomic level, you don’t see this.” Albert Piscopo is president and CEO of The Glenmede Trust Co, which manages $16 billion for individuals, pensions funds, endowments, and others; founded by 4 children of Joseph N. Pew, founder of Sun Oil.

PHILADELPHIA–Editorial urging women in unplanned pregnancies to seek help from various sources: Planned Parenthood, crisis pregnancies centers, Drexel Student health Center. “One thing we can conclude is that class, although important, cannot solely explain what happened. The affluence of the Drexel Hill family suggests that something else is at work here…There is a stigma attached to out-of-wedlock pregnancy, which discourages women from seeking the help they need. We should work toward a society where young pregnant women do not feel alone, ostracized or ashamed.”
